Ace Hardware arrives at The Meadows | Local News

A popular hardware store returns to The Meadows Mall.

“Ace Hardware is returning to Meadows after a long period of absence,” said Mark Zimmerly, one of five partners at Meadows Development, LLC, which owns the mall.

The new store is expected to open before the end of the year.

“I think it will be well received,” Zimmerly said. Every day someone walks up to him and tells him his story of why they like to come to the meadows or shops that they remember many years ago.

“It was one of the things they wanted to see coming back was a hardware store, and Ace Hardware was the place,” he said.

Several years ago, Ace Hardware “was a staple right in the middle of the Meadows,” he said.

The hardware store was located in the meadows until the mid-1980s.

The new Ace Hardware will be located in part of the old Stein Mart store, which had 40,000 square feet of space.

The old Stein Mart space is being demolished and renovated, and Ace Hardware will occupy approximately 1/3 of this space and will be located at the south end.

The owners of the Ace franchise have a rental agreement that they review. “They accepted everything verbally,” Zimmerly said. “We are moving forward.”

Ace Hardware, based in Oak Brook, Ill., Has more than 5,000 locally owned and operated hardware stores around the world, according to its website.

As for the rest of the old Stein Mart space, the owners of Meadows are renovating it to create 10 different retail spaces of varying sizes for interested businesses.

“We prepare it and prepare it,” Zimmerly said. “We can kind of build to measure, because we build it around the interests of particular tenants.”

When complete, the central atrium lobby / walkway that passes Lili Pad and Edward Jones will extend through the old Stein Mart space with part of the wall removed, and the 10 new businesses will be located on the east sides. and west of this hall / walkway.

The owners of Meadows are talking to four potential businesses, including a hair salon, a bridal shop, a restaurant, and a boutique that sells intimate womenswear. The leases have not yet been signed.

“We’re trying to find a hair salon,” Zimmerly said.

Places are available on a first come, first served basis.

Meadows Development LLC took possession of Meadows in 2017.

The Meadows “is open again to host events this year. We already have several booked for this year,” including auto shows, Zimmerly said. Oktoberfest is back this year.

“We have room for more, so if anyone is looking for a location to host their event, we would be more than willing to tell them about it,” he said.

The Meadows, Terre Haute’s first shopping center, opened in 1956 and was developed by Hulman and Co.
