NEW DELHI : Amazon’s Pantry Marketplace topped the YouGov 2021 retail ranking which mapped the brand importance of grocery retailers in the country, he said on Tuesday.
YouGov Retail rankings were gathered based on an index score for each grocery brand, both online and offline. This score is a measure of overall brand health calculated by taking the average of Impression, Quality, Value, Satisfaction, Recommendations, and Reputation over a 12-month period.
The list of top ten Indian brands is based on food and grocery brands, retail chains and delivery services.
Amazon Pantry with a score of 27 leads the chart.
Future Retail’s Big Bazaar is ranked second in the table with a score of 21.1, followed by supermarket chain DMart in third place. The two brands’ strong commitment to affordable pricing could help them strengthen their position among price-conscious consumers amid the pandemic, YouGov said.
Flipkart Supermart, Flipkart’s online grocery brand, was fourth; Tata Digital-backed online grocer Big Basket placed fifth overall with a score of 17.1.
Reliance Smart, Grofers and More are the other notable brands to feature in India’s top ten list over the past year, he added. The Spencer’s distribution chain occupies eighth place in the ranking, followed by its subsidiary Nature’s Basket in ninth.
The ranking reinforces the dominance of online retailers, which in particular saw their activity swell in the aftermath of the pandemic.
Amazon Pantry has expanded its pantry service to more than 300 cities across the country, providing unprecedented support during the covid-19 pandemic, YouGov said in its ranking release.
mint previously reported Amazon’s plans to expand its grocery offerings this year by expanding its reach in dry grocery shopping and doubling the top 50 cities with a wider range.
In February of this year, Amazon integrated its pantry service (dry grocery store) with the Fresh instant grocery service in 10 cities to create an integrated online store with express delivery. In the remaining 290 towns and villages that currently do not have the Fresh service, Pantry will continue to provide dry groceries.
At the same time, 2020 was also marked by serious disruption. Modern retail stores have suffered when consumers have chosen local neighborhood stores or shopped online. The pandemic has also pushed consolidation in the retail sector, with Reliance Industries Ltd agreeing to buy the retail and wholesale assets of the debt-ridden Future Group. The Tata Group has taken a controlling stake in online grocery retailer Big Basket. As a result, competition within the country’s organized retail trade has increased.
