Kansas City International Airport Installs Wireless Chargers from Momentum Dynamics, Becoming the First Airport to Offer Wireless Charging for Its Fleet of Electric Buses | News

MALVERN, Pennsylvania., 23 December 2021 / PRNewswire / – The Aviation Department will use this technology to expand its range of electric buses without installing troublesome above-ground charging infrastructure or taking the buses out of service for charging. PennsylvaniaMomentum Dynamics will provide the charging solution, which will be in place to charge the buses when the new terminal opens in early 2023.

We are designing and building a new modern terminal and we want to make sure that its supporting infrastructure does not detract from the design “, said the fleet manager Kenneth williams. “Induction charging was not only an efficient solution in terms of spending and ongoing costs, but it was the only system we found capable of delivering power without the traditional plug-in infrastructure. “

KCI Airport has long been at the forefront of environmental innovation. In the mid-1990s, the Kansas City Aviation Department was one of the first to adopt compressed natural gas technology when it incorporated CNG vehicles into its shuttle fleet, with a refueling station. . In 2017, the Department of Aviation was the first U.S. airport operator to use all electric buses when it added four BYD buses to its fleet and three more in 2020.

The inductive system, shown here, will provide frequent incremental charging to existing KCI Economy Parking electric shuttles, keeping buses in service along the seven mile loop without the need to return to the garage to recharge them during the day. The system will be supported by two 300 kilowatt (kW) wireless inductive chargers located at the shuttle stops of the new terminal, just outside the baggage claim area. While waiting for the passengers, the electric buses will park on the inductive charging stations and will recharge automatically when they are parked on the underground stations. With this wireless system, charging is fully automatic and requires very little operator interaction. Loading takes place during the loading and unloading of passengers; each charging session ends automatically when the bus leaves the platform. At night, vehicles have the option of recharging out of sight of the public at bus operating facilities, but this is generally not necessary with wireless recharging en route, as the batteries of the buses remain almost fully charged throughout the day. These two chargers are expected to support the entire KCI parking lot of approximately 28 vehicles keeping them in continuous operation during peak demand periods. It eliminates the need to have a dedicated charger for each bus.

As a first step, four existing 30-foot BYD K7 electric buses will be equipped with the Momentum wireless system allowing automatic charging of vehicle batteries. The inductive charging system is designed to work in all weather conditions.

We are proud to be part of the new KCI terminal project, which, thanks to the visionary approach of the KCI management team, will improve the electric vehicle operations of the magnificent terminal by providing invisible automatic recharging without disturbing passengers or the drivers “, noted Andy Daga, CEO and Founder of Momentum Dynamics, a global leader in high power inductive charging. “We are seeing demand around airports on the passenger side for taxis, hotel shuttles, parking operations, as well as on the flight operations side for ground support equipment including tugs, trolleys, catering, fuel, snow removal and maintenance equipment. “
