Seven arrested in retail robbery sting by Lynnwood police

LYNNWOOD, Washington, October 14, 2022 – On Thursday, Oct. 13, the Lynnwood Police Department conducted a raid in conjunction with Lowes and Home Depot, in which officers were placed in the store along with asset protection personnel. This was done so that the subjects could be immediately detained and charged with theft and/or other charges associated with shoplifting or other crimes associated with theft.

The Lynnwood Police Department arrested anyone who was observed concealing merchandise and exiting the store. without paying for said goods. In total there were 7 arrests for crimes related to theft, 1 arrest for intoxication, 3 were drug related (theft of goods to then sell and use money to buy drugs). All subjects were also trespassers of the affected property.

Retail thefts in Lynnwood and Washington states have increased dramatically in recent years, to the point that only a handful are reported to police. At one point during the operation, there were 6-10 marked patrol units visible in the parking lot with emergency lights activated and the subjects were still entering the store with the intention of stealing merchandise.

The Lynnwood Police Department plans to do more operations in the near future with other Lynnwood businesses.

Retailers across the state lost a combined $2.7 billion worth of merchandise to organize retail theft in 2021. In June of this year, Attorney General Ferguson announced the creation of an agency to statewide. Retail Organized Crime Task Force improve coordination and collaboration among law enforcement agencies to combat multi-jurisdictional crimes that endanger employees and cause significant economic damage in Washington State.

Federal crime statistics show the value of items stolen from Washington retailers increased 151% between 2019 and 2020.
